BEAUFORT CAN BE TOP PRODUCER OF ORANGES, PINEAPPLES

LUMADAN Assemblyman Kamralin Ombi has urged the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry to exploit the constituency’s agricultural sector.

“Everyone knows that fruits such as local mandarin oranges and pineapples are synonymous with Beaufort as the district produces the best and sweetest of these fruits,” he said when debating the State Budget 2009 yesterday.

The Ministry, Kamarlin said should carry outa scientific studying how to turn Beaufort in the country’s main producer of local mandarin oranges as well as being an exporter of the fruit.

“A kilogram of the local mandarin oranges costs about RM6 to RM7 and best of all, the fruit is not seasonal, so there will be a constant supply,” he said, adding that the pineapples which are grown in his constituency are also of top quality and together, these two fruits can help generate the State’s income.

He also urged the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry to develop the constituency’s tourism potential as it is slowly gaining recognition as a destination to see the elusive proboscis monkey and fireflies.

“Other than building infrastructure such as chalets and resthouse, the ministry must also include the area in its list of main tourist spots in Sabah so that more people can learn about this place and what it has to offer,” Kamarlin said.

Kamarlin also urged the Government to upgrade several roads especially in low lying areas in his constituency which is flood prone.

Daily life including the schooling process of children are affected everytime flood occurs, he said adding that by upgrading and elevating the roads from Padas Damit to Beaufort, the residents will be able to go about their daily routine easily.
