The Education Ministry is studying the possibility of including History in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination if the subject is taught in Year 3 starting 2010. Its Deputy Minister Datuk Razali Ismail said the matter was being studied in the “Transformation of the Curriculum for Primary Schools” that was slated for implementation two years from flow. “We are considering the proposal by Prime Minister Datuk Sen Abdullah Ahmad Badawi that History is made a compulsory subject for students from Year 3 until Form 5. “The school curriculum will be determined after serious discussions with interested parties like Parent-Teacher Associations and specialist teachers,” he told a media conference at Parliament lobby here yesterday. Razali said new teachers would be given adequate training as preparation for the teaching of History in schools so that it could be implemented as planned. History elements would also be taught to students in Year 1 and 2 via the humanitariad and language subjects. Presently, History content at primary school level could b found in the subject Local Studies. “Students must be exposed to History elements aimed at making them knowledgeable in community ties, understand and appreciate the country’s history,” he said. - Bernama
