Three bills to be tabled before Abdullah steps down

Three bills on the setting up of the Judges Appointment ‘Commission, Prevention of Corruption Commission and Special Complaints Commission will be tabled in Parliament before Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hands over the premiership to his successor in March. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said the Judges Appointment Commission Bill would be tabled during the current Dewan Rakyat session. The Special Complaints Commission Bill however, would be tabled during the Parliament session scheduled for February next year. These are the reforms that he (Abdullah) was talking about and we hope to do this before he goes. We are taking this measure so that all the Prime Minister’s pledges can be implemented,” he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya Gathering organized by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department, here yesterday. Abdullah had earlier listed three major initiatives to be implemented before handing over the premiership to his successor before his term as Umno President ends in Marc 2009. The first initiative was to establish the three commission pertaining to the appointment of judges, prevention of corruption and special complaints. The second initiative concerned the Government’s commitment towards strengthening an widening the social security coverage and the third initiative was to renew commitment on efforts towards creating a united and harmonious nation. - Bernama
