THURSDAY-16 OCTOBER 2008- HEART TRANSPLANT GIRL LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST

Heart transplant girl living life to the fullest

KUALA LUMPUR:

Jaws dropped as double heart transplant patient Tee Hui Yi, dubbed the ‘miracle girl’, turned up at the National Heart Institute (IJN) to attend a Han Raya gathering for 11 heart transplant patients yesterday. That’s because doctors were stunned to see the 16-year-old confidently waltzing into the IJN like any normal teenager, glowing in good health and radiating in confidence. Dressed in a pair of blue shorts and pink top, Hui Yi had even put on weight — a living example of the wonders of modern medical marvels. The doctors were initially shocked that this was the same girl who was fighting for her life before undergoing a heart transplant at the IJN in October last year. When her body rejected the heart, she underwent a second transplant within 24 hours before she was discharged in January this year. At the Han Raya gathering yesterday, the new Hui Yi was sufficient reason for the doctors, together with the others present, to give her a standing ovation. They must have recalled the time last year when the teenager was a picture of emaciation, having anxiously waited for three years for donors to undergo a heart transplant.
