MONDAY-20 OCTOBER 2008- SABAH WATERS SAFE FROM MILF FIGHTERS, SAYS NAVY

Sabah waters safe from MILF fighters, says Navy

KOTA KINABALU:

Sabah’s waters are safe from any encroachment by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters, says the Royal Malaysian Navy. Navy Region Two Commander First Admiral Syed Zahiruddin Putra Syed Osman said there should be no worries about the safety of Sabah’s waters as the Navy can defend any attempt by any party to encroach on the State’s waters. “One of the operations that we do continuously is ‘Ops Pasir’. So there is no doubt about the security of our waters,” Syed Zahiruddin said when met at the Navy’s Han Raya open house held at Sepanggar Navy base on Friday. “If there is something amiss, that could be traced as we have the Police, the Army as well as the Navy units that always patrol there,” he said. At least 13MILF fighters were killed recently after their stronghold in the Southern Philippines was attacked by Philippines aircraft. The operation was launched to expel MILF fighters hiding in the concrete stronghold in Datu Piang area. Syed Zahiruddin said he had not received any report pertaining to the encroachment of Malaysia’s waters by any party, adding the Navy is strong enough and ready to face any untoward situation.
