Employment Day for Disabled Persons Oct 25

A program aimed at raising public awareness on the employment of people with disabilities in the State will be held at Dewan Masyarakat Tawau on Oct 25. Jointly organised by the Labour Department, Sabah General Welfare Selvice Departnent and Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), the program, themed Employment Day for Disabled Persons, is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman. Labour Department Director Siti Aishah Mohd Asri said that the program is an opportunity for the employers to better understand the needs of disabled persons and their responsibility in providing jobs for these less fortunate people. At the same time, the disabled persons will be made better aware of the employment opportunities that are available for them, she said, adding that the program is also aimed at improving cooperation with volunteer organisations and relevant corporations in the effort to create more programs to encourage employment of the disabled. Siti Aishah told a press conference at Labour Department office at KWSP Building here yesterday that Government Departments, agencies and employers will hold an exhibition on that day besides conducting job seminar and talk, walk-in interview and quiz. There will also be presentation of Excellent Disabled Persons Award and Caring Employer Award by the Chief Minister, she said. Meanwhile, Siti Aishah said the Labour Department under the Human Resource Ministry has setup a registration system to ensu’14 a thorough supervision of the registration of disabled persons. Employers who wish to employ disabled persons can use the system to register and notify them of job vacancies in their companies, she said. She said assistance in the form of grants and Business Encouragement Aid Scheme for Disabled Persons will be provided for the disabled persons who already have a business or want to open and develop a business provided they will also employ disabled persons. The departments and agencies that will participate in the program under the Human Resource Ministry are Labour Department, Social Security Organisation, Sandakan Industrial Training Institute, Skills Development Department, Enterprise Communication Department, National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH). General Welfare Service Department and Human Resource Development Department will also take part together with Borneo Samudera Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia, Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Sime Darby, Felda Holdings and Sabah Softwood Berhad. The walk-in interview will be conducted by Promenade Hotel, ICT Cosmopoint Ent, De Choice Hotel MB Hotel and Ing Intergrated. Meanwhile, Siti Aishah said the Labor Department had solved 635 claim cases out of 760 cases last year involving RM437,078.53. compared to 2006, the Department solved more cases in 200 , involving monetary claims inc ding unpaid salary, unpaid allowance and many more which are against the Labour Ordinance of Sabah (Cap 67),” she said. In 2006, the Department solved cases compared to 675 which amounted to RM375,753.12 and m January to June this year, the epartment solved 469 cases out of 17 cases, amounted to RM246,296. 87.
