MONDAY-6 OCTOBER 2008- GUIDELINE FOR PART-TIME WORKERS

Guideline for part-time workers

KLANG:

A guideline on part-time workers comprising students from institutions of higher learning and private sector workers will be drawn up, said Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam. He said the guideline, which was being formulated by the Manpower Department, was to enable the employers and employees to know their rights and responsibilities. He said that among the matters to be included in the guideline were contributions to the Employees’ Security Organisation (Socso) coverage and the interpretation on part-time workers who were eligible to benefit from the EPF contributions and Socso coverage. “The guideline would facilitate employers in managing such matters because there are part-time workers who only come to work for one or two hours while there are those who work for a much longer period,” he said. He said this to reporters after opening the Seminar on Work Ethics organised by the Human Resource Ministry and the Kapar MIC division, here yesterday. On the request by the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) that employers pay a cost of living allowance ofRM300 to each worker, Subramaniam said the Ministry had been informed by the MTUC on the proposal. - Bernama
